U.S. Congressmen vs. The Logan Act

So, recently 47 United States Senators wrote an open letter to the Iranian Government. You can read their letter here => Letter from Senators. In their letter the wanted to address the Iranian Nuclear Weapons negotiations that have been taking place and the Iranian leader’s speech to Congress and President Obama. The Senators wanted to inform/remind the Iranian leaders about the U.S. Constitution and who really will have the most influence in the negotiations. The language that they use is accurate to the facts but is very undermining the President’s authority. These Senators may have the opportunity for more years in office than any President (which I think is ridiculous), however, President Obama or whom ever the current President is has the authority to negotiate with foreign countries. The Senate sending this letter even violates an Act written into law by John Adams in the 1700s.

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

This act basically states that no civilian or other persons may not negotiate with a foreign country unless given permission from the United States. The President Obama made a comment towards it saying that he thought it was “ironic” that some congressmen want to make friends with the Iranians and work together with them, but yet won’t work with Obama to make America better. If you ask me, those Congressmen are just trying to push themselves forward politically. It seems as though President Obama will be just ignoring the letter for now until they can reach a deal with the Iranians and then he will deal with the letter afterwards. I think these Congressmen, once their terms are up should not be allowed to run for office again and their income after leaving office disappears. How dare they overstep the President’s authority. He is the face of our country. You’re not. You don’t go to foreign countries and meet with their leaders. Obama risks his life every time he goes over there.
