I never knew this about WWI. But as most should know, this year marks the 100th anniversary of WWI beginning. On this night exactly 100 years ago,
thousands of British, Belgian and French soldiers put down their rifles, stepped out of their trenches and spent Christmas mingling with their German enemies along the Western front.
I’ve learned a lot through classes but I do not think that I ever heard about this Christmas Truce before. What was really interesting from the article is that Pope Benedict XV asked for the truce before but was denied.
This day showed the true compassion of human beings even in times of war. The Germans sang their Christmas tunes and the British sang their’s. They exchanged cigarettes, buttons, and many of other things. They were also able to bury their dead properly after their bodies laid slain in No Man’s Land.
